External territories, sector Regentis. The distance from the center of the galaxy : 43 thousand light years. Desert planet Toronto, orbiting a binary star, a haven for smugglers real estate agents and gangsters of all stripes. For centuries, was the site of Radionto Refuse Globale, a standoff between different gangs of marauding boards of directors, so that the surface of the planet is literally littered with the debris of ancient bogus protocols, buried under the sands of the desert. Toronto officially colonized a few centuries ago, by boomers, opportunists, altruists, artists and other dilated colonists. On the planet there are spore-children of different races and ages, aliens and aubergine Aborigines: fussy media and tedia annoying the people of Love, and aggressive drone nomads from International Space Station. Government - complete anarchy; a sort of power exists held only by a king of the underworld, from a race called the Hutt, viz. Robba the Hutt. Regent authority sceptre is held hostage by a clan of dj's, musicians, artists and teacher/magicians against ongoing claims by a consortium of national paralyticians. Mostly harmless.

CKLN Radio Inc is dissolving but your favourite shows and hosts are moving to Radio Regent

On December 14, 2011, the courts granted CKLN Radio Incorporated's request to dissolve the corporation and also dismissed a motion by Mary Young for a derivative action, ordering Ms. Young to pay CKLN $10,000 in costs. This request for dissolution was made following a vote at our October 11, 2011 Special General Meeting in which the membership overwhelmingly approved a motion to seek dissolution. On December 26, 2011, our contract with Regent Park Focus ends and CKLN.fm will cease broadcasting on the internet. However, Regent Park Focus Youth Media Arts Centre has announced that they will be launching a new internet radio service, Radio Regent, on January 1, 2012.

While Radio Regent is unaffiliated with CKLN Radio Incorporated and will be managed by Regent Park Focus, volunteers currently at CKLN have been invited to join the new service so many of your favourite shows and personalities will be on the Radio Regent program schedule. The Radio Regent livestream is currently being mirrored on the CKLN.fm website, however, the livestream is not affiliated with CKLN Radio Incorporated and CKLN Radio Incorporated is not responsible for it or the programming it carries.

Vaclav Havel, a hero for today

It was his love of rock and roll as much as his moral outrage at the Communist system that brought him to prominence.

He co-wrote the influential Charter 77 anti-Communist declaration in protest at the arrest of a Czechoslovak rock band, the Plastic People of the Universe.

A perennial contender for the Nobel Peace Prize, Havel never won, but remained active in anti-Communist causes from Cuba to China until his death.

He urged Chinese authorities to release dissident Liu Xiaobo, whose Charter 08 call for greater political freedom in China was inspired by Czechoslovakia's Charter 77.

In his classic call for everyday citizens to recognize their power to change their world, Havel uses the example of a Soviet-era grocer placing a state-sponsored sign in his store window with the slogan: "Workers of the world, unite!"

"If the greengrocer had been instructed to display the slogan 'I am afraid and therefore unquestioningly obedient;' he would not be nearly as indifferent to its semantics, even though the statement would reflect the truth," Havel wrote.

So why does he do it? "The sign helps the greengrocer to conceal from himself the low foundations of his obedience, at the same time concealing the low foundations of power. It hides them behind the facade of something high. And that something is ideology," Havel wrote. "Ideology offers human beings the illusion of an identity, of dignity, and of morality while making it easier for them to part with them."

"I would be glad if it was felt that I have done something generally useful," he said. "I don't care much about personal fame or popularity. I would be satisfied with the feeling that I had a chance to help with something in general, something good. That history gave me that chance."

F.Y.I. : The seventh annual Canadian Folk Music awards gala will take place at the Isabel Bader Theatre, 93 Charles Street West, Toronto, Ontario. Awards will be presented in nineteen categories throughout an evening hosted by Shelagh Rogers of CBC Radio and Benoit Bourque of La Bottine Souriante. Doors open at 7:00 pm with the awards presentation at 8:00 pm, followed by a reception at Alumni Hall, Victoria College.

Performances by Loreena McKennitt, Jim Brynes + Steve Dawson, Rose Cousins, Soul Influence, De Temps Antan and the Common Thread Community Chorus.

Wiki-wise, "Owen Gray also known as Owen Grey (born 5 July 1939) is one of Jamaica's 'Foundation' singers whose work spans the R&B, ska, rocksteady, and reggae eras of Jamaican music, and he has been credited as Jamaica's first home-grown singing star."

One of the true pioneers of the Jamaican music industry alongside such revered artists as Jackie Edwards, Laurel Aitken, Simms & Robinson, Alton Ellis, and Derrick Morgan, to name just a few, he hasn't yet received the recognition that is due him, particularly from a government which still fails to do the job in honoring these vintage names for their outstanding contributions to the development of Jamaican music.

At 1:00 Friday September 30, be there in Corby's Orbit when Greg Lawson comes in spinning to large up the station with Owen Gray material spanning his career of unique and original musical conceptions.

As the man himself has said : "I'm tellin' you, I'm tellin' you! I said before I go I have to sing a regular reggae in opera, because everything I do from Jamaica is the first, the first, the first, first, first, first. On this date in 1970, Jimi Hendrix was perhaps murdered, perhaps by hismanager, British Intelligence’s MI-5 agent, Michael Jeffreys, who, though listed as a casualty in an airline crash, may still be alive.

Jimi, though! He brought fresh cascades and categories of primal soundinto being, very much based upon the voice of Little Richard, the saxophone of KingCurtis, the vernacular of the blues and R&B, and the sound of warplaneengines, which he absorbed as a paratrooper at Fort Campbell. (As he jumped, hewould later recall, "...once you get out there everythingis so quiet, all you hear is the breezes-s-s-s...".

The first proponent of Marshall amplifiers,which bore his own middle name, he made the whammy bar, feedback and distortionthe new language of electric guitars. The conversational quality of hispioneering use of the wah-wah pedal gave him unique proprietry, in rockmusic, over the prolonged line in improvising paragraphs of music outside ofthe melodic limits of traditional electric guitar players.

He channeled Bob Dylan’s beat storm-of-consciousness lyrical energy and dressed as a Beatle would. Inmanaging this level of adaptation, he became the first and foremostAfro-American (and Cherokee) in the revolutionary hippie assault on the worldwide military-industrial establishment.

Gentle and perpetually bemused, he avoidedpolitical involvement, making private donations to organizations that he felt supporteda freer world. However, he was drawn into confrontation with the law over hisuse of recreational and psychedelic drugs, most notably in Toronto in 1969.

His influence over the cultural activism andartistry of progressive music continues to this day.

We then load all our gear and instruments onto bikes and ride as a group to our other two beautiful stops.

Winners of CKLN.FM's Mad Salutes Awards in Broadcasting and Social Activism 2011

Congratulations to all the winners and to the success of Mad Salutes Night through the efforts of CKLN's staff organizers and all the performing artists -Shaunga Tagore, Qara Clemente, Murphy Browne, Bob Wiseman, K.C. Roberts and the Live Revolution, Clara Engel, Yvette Tollar, and M.C.Clifton Joseph.

1) CKLN Activist Award: Awarded to a volunteer who has contributed to the fight for social justice and grassroots community engagement.

The winner is.....Jointly awarded to Kristin Schwartz and Susy Alvarez. Kristin is former news director at CKLN who used her time to report on a variety of issues from mining injustices to the World Social Forum. Susy Alvarez, is long time host of Friday Word of Mouth, including coordinating for No one Is Illegal Radio and OCAP radio

2) The Pioneer in Radio Award: Given to a show that has demonstrated ground-breaking originality.

The winner is Fantastic Voyage, formerly hosted by Ron Nelson in CKLN's early days. The timeslot came to be identified with underground artists. Ron Nelson currently hosts reggae mania.

3) The TurnTable Arts Award: Awarded to music programmers who keep the Vinyl tradition alive

The winners are Nik Red of Statik and Mano from Bruckbeat Radio.

4) Behind the Mic Award: This given to a volunteer who works tirelessly off air to support the station.
This year's winner has been there for CKLN in its most turbulent moments: the winner is Chris Scully.

5) The Arnie Achtman Award for long service in spoken word programming: named after one of the founders of the Life Rattle show, Arnie and Guy Allan worked for

twenty-five years to carry out their vision of autobiographical storytelling and writing as a form of the community's self expression.

The winners are Norman Otis Richmond for Saturday Morning Live and Troy (The Boy) from Inversions.

6) The Mllton Blake Award for long service in music programming is named after the former host of The Musical triangle and a much beloved community member.

We are pleased to announce a tie for first place between Verlia Stephens andColin Smith.

7) The Award for Most Canadian Content goes to the play list that entered the most entries that are Canadian. The winner is our very own Paul Corby of Corby's Orbit. Corby's Orbit has presented, over the years, a parade of indie artists acoustic and Ottawise, and has been among the strongest supporters of Toronto's independent music scene.

8) The CKLN Mentor Award: This award is presented to a CKLN volunteer who has helped mentor others in the community.

The winners are Norman Otis Richmond and Ron Gaskin.

9) The Girls and Women in Radio Award: this award celebrates women who make radio their work and their passion. This year we had a tie for the winners, so we invited Amita Hamda and Murphy Browne to the stage, as well an honourable mention going to Julie Hill. Our congratulations.

10) CKLN Generations Award honours our elders and our youth. We called Don Weitz to the stage to thank him for his wisdom and also, Judah to the stage, as our youngest volunteer

11) The CKLN Friends Award goes to an agency or organization that has supported CKLN over the years. There were so many nominees, but the name that came up most consistently was Regent Park Focus, a Youth Media Arts centre that has done programming at CKLN for over a decade. And when we needed them, they invited us to share their space. From all of us, we say Thank You Focus and your amazing staff!

"The 6 piece band mixes elements of rock, pop and soul and melds them into unique songs which at times feature male vocals, at others female vocals, and a lot of the time you hear group chants". The band will be bringing the new songs to the Orbit, with an official Toronto CD release tonight at the Horseshoe.

Re: Revocation of the CKLN-FM license
February 3, 2011
Dear Chairman von Finckenstein,
I am writing with regard to the CRTC’s recent decision to revoke the license of
CKLN-FM radio.
Independent, community-based radio is essential to our broadcasting system.
Diversity of ideas and analysis is important for a healthy democracy. For these
reasons, CKLN was created many years ago.
I understand that CKLN may have previously fallen out of compliance with CRTC
regulations. The station’s staff, however, has made efforts to remedy these past
problems. They are making progress and are determined to meet all the
requirements of their license renewal.
In light of these efforts, I believe the revocation of CKLN’s license to be
significantly premature. To echo the dissenting opinion of CRTC commissioner
Louise Poirier, I believe that the measure adopted is disproportionate to the fault
in question. It would have been more prudent and consistent with the
Commission’s common practices to issue a mandatory order accompanied by
close monitoring of the licensee. This would have constituted fair treatment for
CKLN Toronto.
CKLN has always worked hard to provide a voice to the marginalized and to
speak out against inequality. It is vital that these voices not be silenced.

Should the decision of the CRTC to revoke CKLN’s license be appealed, I would
strongly urge the commission to reconsider the severity of the measure they
have decided to implement.
