A popular event welcoming spring happened this past weekend, with a local pharmacy presenting music of peace, hope and humanity, thanks to (L. to R.) facilitating pharmacist Farah Thawer, LuA - Shameema Soni, Maryem Tollar, and Nagmeh Faramand, and Paul Corby, the instigating Orbiteer. With the sunshine, the songs, the hyacinths, and the ice cream - LuA trio was in full bloom for a Nowruz celebration within the I.D.A. drug store at Henley
Gardens.
Starting with an installation at this
east-end Toronto drugstore to fill the empty space left by the post office's removal last December, the space has taken on the secondary role of a community hub, displaying paintings by the Beach Guild Of Fine Art, that turned into an ongoing rotating residency.
A successful Christmas concert there by local Beaches singer / songwriter Melanie Peterson demanded an encore.
So Saturday's pre-equinox party was booked and drew in about fifty friends and neighbours over the course of the two-hour concert, which featured the band's original uplifting songs, as well as some Stevie Wonder and Bob Marley, and a breath-taking percussion solo by Iranian-Canadian percussionist Nagmeh Faramand (see below). Burnt marshmallow ice cream from Beaches treat purveyor Ed's Real Scoops helped maintain the chill vibe and fans of all ages swayed to the music for two sun-filled hours basking in the scent of hyacinths.
