Musical Rambunctuosity Prevails at Dollar Bill's Revival in Kingston Ontario

Soundcheck with The Whiteley Brothers Band: with Morgan Davis (seated),
Bucky Berger on drums,

Ken Whiteley,

Victor Bateman on bass

and Chris Whiteley.

Prime mover Peter Lloyd warming up to Eugene Smith, first out of the gate in an epic night of Canadian talent. >>>>>>>

Rediscovered master tapes were the impetus for a full-scale one-night stand starring performers who helped to make the Prince George Hotel a legendary stopover for touring acts in the late 70`s and early eighties.

The sold-out evening, at $160 a chair, benefited local cancer patients and the hearts of all who attended.

The place was bustling all night as Canada's finest musicians gave their all to the crowd.

Bassist Kit Johnson scraped by as a guest artist with The Whitely Brothers, soloing on the Zydeco Tie. Also featured were blues legend Morgan Davis, Brother Chris on the Hands-Free Harmonica and Brother Ken in a leaping gospel revival tune.

The Whiteleys left the stage to the perennial soul / funk mastery of The Lincolns featuring uplifting vocals by Steve Ambrose and Jordan John, with special guests Donny (Downchild) Walsh and Zekiya Hooker (daughter of album delight, Mr. John Lee Hooker).

And as many patrons began to lose their ability to walk or communicate effectively, The High Sheriff Of Hell, and album opener, David Wilcox brought his guitar firestorm to the stage, including a performance of Brain Fever, which he hasn't played in thirty years. It will be longer than that before Kingston (or any other place in the known universe) sees as diverse, as energetic or as meaningful a show as descended here that magic night. David was joined onstage by M.C. Dan Aykroyd, Chris Whiteley & Donny Walsh for a tremendous Flip Flop and Fly finale, rocking the clientele and the very building into history one last time.

The Approaching Orbit

In the irascible questing of perennial orbital investigation, certain major tremors of creativity have become so obvious that you may not actually have noticed. Incoming Albertan Tanner James will be dropping up with his current tour repertoire of stories and songs at 5:15.

Then at 5:45 legendary Canadian folk hero Bob Bossin will dial in with a surreptitious preview of what can be expected when his solo performance of Davy The Punk , a re-imagined thought/memory play that calls to mind the life and adventures of his rambler-gambler father, debuts at the Innes Deluxe Theatre in Toronto from June 10-15.

And then at 6:00 my pre-eminent muchacho from Chiapas, Quique Escamilla  will come on board to illuminate the history and significance of his new release, 500 Years Of Night, an album of original and passionate music that spans multiple genres, and re-awakens the revolution vividly and victoriously in your very ears.

Gemology of Canadian Music Week and the fascinating facets of Quincy Jones

Canadian Music Week: Burning both ends not an option this year. I struggled to find time to end up having no regrets, and I believe I did really well on quality this year, but circumstances prevented the net being spread wide enough to take it all in.

Okay, here are The Gems.

Brody Dalle. Everyone said so. It`s true. Body slamming, shreiking and moaning, genome altering drummer, sunburn noise. Perfect eye makeup, too.

Saidah Baba Talibah. Fuel injected hot sauce with an Idle No More agenda, crystallized band of ferocious bedrock outcroppings, loud proud crowd control and contortionist choreography.

Full Circle. True Toronto hiphop, spreading lyrics like salt on an icy driveway, thunderous beats and instantaneous air passes with zero dribbling.

Neko Case. Giantess of country soul, crazed comedienne, along with deadpan partner Kelly Hogan, sparkplug firecracker superhero and how can one woman have so much flaming hair? Brought The Dodos too.

Quincy Jones: Bestie of Ray Charles, Sinatra, Brando and Smelly Thriller. Listen Up.
"Street is the button.", "Be-bop, Do-wop and Hip-hop. There's a reason for that.", "Producers are important, sequencing is half the secret, songs are the key, but one person brings the event to the hearts of the audience and that is the engineer or the director of photography.", ``You got to go to know``, `Michael fired me because he said I`d lost touch , because I didn`t know that rap was dead; this was in 1987.`` and ``Coincidence is God`s way of remaining anonymous`.

Kurt Elling: No, he wasn`t on the program, but he brought iceberg cool and lucid jazz dreaming, poetry and concrete to Koerner Hall Saturday, whirling nanobeats and panoramic cityscapes into the shifting timbres of his sterling voice and manner, wearing a blue suit that was absolute.

Regrets, I`ve had a few, but CMW was awesomely nice, my way, too.

Saska-tutely

Glowingly original song-writing and a Tweedy-dry vocal style have brought Keiffer McLean of Saskatchewan a well-deserved nomination for last year's Canadian Folk Music Awards, and now a chance to charm Toronto audiences in the musical tsunami of Canadian Music Week. He appears at The Gladstone Hotel at 9:00 tonight and on Corby's Orbit today at 5:15. A must-hear.

Toronto’s Cameron House will serve as a home-base for a series of dates in May for Jen Lane, another  escapee from a long solitary Saskatoon winter, where she has been writing about empowerment, renewal and love's constant rescue.

Long-time musical and life partner, John Antoniuk (Smokekiller), is also providing musical accompaniment and alternating sets every Wednesday from 6-8:00 p.m.

The CBC’s Sheila Coles once commented “Jen has hit a depth in her song-writing that people twice her age struggle to find.”

Both will be sharing some music and stories live on the show today at 6:00.
