5:50 Christian Values

Charlie Christian (July 29, 1916 – March 2, 1942) with Lionel Hampton's Orchestra ~ Haven't Named It Yet

Charlie Christian's  supreme accomplishments include bridging the gaps between country, blues, swing and modern jazz, with an extensive knowledge of diminished and augmented scales, creating new ideas even after 20 consecutive choruses, and a supernatural ability to accent in a syncopated flow to heighten the excitement of dance music. He is credited with creating the word be-bop and playing in a relaxed style (learned from Lester Young) that foreshadowed cool jazz. Although credited for very few, Christian composed many of the original tunes recorded by the Benny Goodman Sextet. His words have never been quoted, and there is no performance footage of him. He never led a band. He died at age 25. Not only guitarists, but every major jazz musician has found inspiration in his work.

Orbits East ~ Journey To The Coast

In search of the floating and fleeting musiques un peu partout majestueux et enormes, for a weekend at The Halifax Jazz Festival and on the Cabot Trail for another week, I will be out of radio range, so stay tuned to an archive broadcast this Friday, and a whole show of concentric circumstance upon my return.

I will be giving away a pair of tickets to Anna Egge & The Sentimentals @ Hugh's Room that night, on the show of the 22nd, to whomever can answer a skull-testing question at 647 344 4134.
They are currently touring their new album SAY THAT NOW.

Be the one!
O-vwa Tous!

Stringer, Busker, Dreamer

Incendiary Australian singer Liz Stringer is in town for an intensive barrage of live performances featuring songs from her new record
All The Bridges on Roaring Girl Records.
She'll be airlifting into the Orbit early on in the show this Friday and her songs of vivid passion and gorgeous heartbreak will be warming the flight deck live.

Big talk is in the air about the power of a new award-nominated film,
Busking Turf Wars.
It screens on Saturday 9 July at U. of T.'s
JJR MACLEOD AUDITORIUM.
The star, Steven Lockmoore (aka Christy Coysh)a busker from Leeds, is in Toronto as part of Toronto’s ReelHeART International Film Festival and will hopefully be persuaded to come and scrub a little guitar on our orbital corner.

And at 6:00, the progressive and influential Canadian composer and singer Sienna Dahlen will make herself available for a few minutes of chat concerning her ethereal new disk with saxman Joel Miller, Dream Cassette
They are currently touring this multi-faceted gem, and will bring it in full force to The Rex next Wednesday 13 July.
