T.U.R.F. Lucks Out

Opening night of Toronto's first downtown Urban Roots Fest, (denying, denying, denying the forecast) featured steady sunlight, enthusiastic crowds and a misty rural mystique within sight of the CN Tower.

I'll be featuring these artists and many more too this afternoon from 5:00-7:00 on Radio Regent Toronto.

 Joel Plaskett made it all real with dedicated showmanship and an intimate patter between songs that honed the audience's partying powers. Only light beer left at the end of his set.

Our Station Manager sent this out recently:

Hey everyone,

It saddens me to say this but Radio Regent is down. The broadcast computer saw its last day today and was put to rest. I got the warning on Friday (during Corby's Orbit~ed.) and fixed the issue, but the problem continued to arise throughout the weekend. 

Tyrone and myself stuck around a little later tonight and got a new computer installed. We still need to install the soundcard and do a few updates as the computer we are using now is pretty old, but works. 

We are still airing archived shows but from the on-air computer as I've installed shoutcast on it. 

There will be no programming on Radio Regent till further notice & till the new computer is installed. We hope to have RADIO REGENT up by tomorrow, but till then wait on my next email.

I am very sorry about this but I will try to get it fixed ASAP.

OMG ~ Eeeeek! Braids!!!
Okay...But wait....I'm getting ahead of myself.
Okay: The Comfort Zone, home of white light cocktails and stoner chic in T.O. Midriffs, silk jackets, crazy makeup, glowsticks, trippabble light-show, celestial convergences hourly. This time out it was new band Paula, sending up some echo funk inside a pixillated typhoon of projected colour, advanced string theory and chilly-cool tunesicles to draw the crowd into a dreamy poodle pasture under a low ceiling of sound. Music nobs arriving late were  unable to penetrate the thick clutch of fans ready for the first Braids Toronto show since Horseshoe 2012.

Efficient cable mongering and drum wrangling had Raphaelle, Austin and Taylor on their marks right on time. I was offered a table dance for my front row vantage point, but stood my ground for an eerie and astral set of post-jungle drums, malletted electro-marshmallow vibraphone and the wonder-eyed vocal aeronautics of Raphaelle Standell-Preston (founding co-vocalist Katie Lee was neither present nor referenced). All-new material featured the multiple brands that Braids have come to radiate - deconstructed lyrics, moebius keyboard oscillations, impermeable iceberg tempos and heart-stopping melodic leaps. Feedback was monstrously available in such a low room but occasionally blended right in and melted into the lava-lanche of loud pounding sound. The band seemed relaxed and tightly interwoven after a recent swing through the southern States and a SXSW showcase.
Patrons, fans and corpo-weenies alike were awe-inspired and, for a few days, nothing sounded really amazing to me.
Then I cracked open Sarah Jaffe's The Body Wins. But that's a story for another post.
Honestly, though. BRAIDS!
Sophomore album, Flourish // Perish,  is due for release in August

NXNE Gives It A First-Night Try

 As you & I know, dearest, time is music, and even moreso when a music circus like NXNE hits To-burg. The frantic fanatic needs all the corners cut in order to hit multiple venues and hear all that needs to be heard.
Last night's kickoff blew my itinerary apart. At the Cameron,, a no-show from Kansas City's Samantha Clemons left a crew of tune hogs and bloggers sitting for an hour with no explanation, announcement or apology . With the Hard Luck, May, and Rivoli programming close by, our time was wasted  while we watched The Pelts' interminable sound check.

 Fortunately The Pelts brought the party. "A prom taken over by Quentin Tarantino", as they like to say. Clockwork musicianship and harmony supporting re-inspired 1964 songwriting.  Set the ears alive and made the dance floor arise with flash and frenzy. Charcoal suits and turquoise ties. They set the bar high for best wedding reception at NXNE ever. Then I moved on up to The Supermarket.

When I finally tired of waiting for the magnificent Lauren Mann & The Fairly Odd Folk through a set of redneck halt-country from a band that should remain nameless, I took a chance with Coyote at Rancho Relaxo. What an upgrade: architecturally sound bass lines buttressed by a kicking drummer and above-code keyboards, all in aid of one of the sweatiest guitar/vocal front-line combos ever. Well-spun songs and - bliss- Rancho has installed A.C.!




When I got back to The Supermarket, Samantha Martin and The Haggard were in a fine and harmonious mid-set, with another no-show (from Lauren Mann) swept under the carpet.
