On December 21st the Godfather of Hip Hop and electro-funk, the man who coined the term "Hip Hop" and a true living legend, makes his triumphant return to Toronto to celebrate the holiday season and all things funky. Expect a musical history lesson spanning the genres of Hip Hip, Funk, House, Soul, Breaks and so much more.

The current December 2012 issue of Rolling Stone Magazine listed Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock" as 3rd Greatest Hip-Hop song of all time.  They credit the song for starting break-dancing and introducing the Roland 808 beats to Hip Hop along with developing the sonic language of electro, Detroit Techno, Freestyle R&B, Miami Bass and most of modern Dance Music.

Along with DJs Grandmaster Flash and Kool Herc (a trio known in the 70's as Hip-Hop's Tri-Force) Bambaataa also developed "Turntablism" and were some of the first "Crate Diggers", scouring vinyl records around the world for unique & funky drums breaks they could turn into songs of the own.  The Tri-Force's New York City block parties is where the foundation of Hip-Hop developed with the help of MCs who used percussive, chanting street language poetry style over the sampling of funky breakbeats.  It was at this time that AfrikaBambaatta labeled the new music "Hip-Hop" in an article in the Village Voice in 1982, in reference to the use of the word in SugarHill Gang's track Rapper Delight and LoveBug Starski's track Positive Life.

A former gang warlord of the Black Spades, Bambaataa vowed to use Hip-Hop to draw angry kids out of gangs and formed the Universal Zulu Nation whose values are Peace, Love, Unity and Having Fun.  Now almost 40 years later the Zulu Nation is an international organization with autonomous branches in Japan, France, the UK, Australia, South Korea and South Africa.  Inspired by his own world view shift when he won an essay contest to visit Africa as a young man, Bambaataa tours all over the world as an ambassador of Hip-hop and brings young at-risk youth from NYC along with him to give them a global experience.

In 1990 he was named by LIFE Magazine as one of the MOST IMPORTANT Americans of the 20th Century. In 2006, Bam was honored for his incredible achievements by VH1 at the annual 'Hip Hip Honors' show. In 2007, he was nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.  “Planet Rock” has become arguably the most sampled song in music history, having been remixed and sampled by the likes of Paul Oakenfold, Westbam, George Acosta, LL Cool J and countless others. 

Still extremely active, Bam continues to record, tour and educate, maintaining his status as a living legend and forefather of the art.  In 2012, Cornell University announced the appointment of DJ Afrika Bambaataa as a visiting scholar for a three year term where he will discuss the origins of hip-hop and the cultural relevance and race-related aspects of the American artistic movement.

The Godfather of Hip-Hop, Afrika Bambaataa, the man who defined Hip-Hop Culture (MCing, DJing, B-boying and graffiti writing) performs in Toronto on Friday December 21st at Revival Bar.

Sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar is no more. He passed away in San Diego, US at the age of 92. Pt Ravi Shankar was suffering from a lung ailment and had been admitted to a hospital last week.

A veritable gem..with virtuoso tabla of Chatur Lal recorded in 1963 when Shankar had fire in his belly ..was in his early prime....the majestic start ...the meandering melody thus reconditions the soul inculcating in it a certain sense of levitation.. imbued with divinity..a kind of mantra..a dialogue with God...elevates you to Nirvana ..leads you to Valhalla and firmly deposits you there ... sempiternally...tabla solo in the middle ( 5:51 to 8:44) by Chatur Lal is simply mesmerizing! The End of the World As We Party

Here's an event that's being staged in Calgary on the 21st of December to provide a "Restaurant At The End Of The World" ambience for 15 local musicians who have been asked to play like it’s their last gig on earth.  

 Just a few of the featured bands include:

• Rock club mainstays the Pine Tarts, who will channel William S. Burroughs via the Book of the Dead
• Doom and Delta duo Bob Keelaghan and Clinton St. John’s newest project, Hollow Brethren, providing anthemic sing-alongs for the end times
• Face-melting rock of ATOMIS, changing human consciousness one power chord at a time
• A love-feast of defiant positivity from psychedelic pop duo Ryan Bourne and Kiarra Albina
• Slide guitar wizard Mike Watson, who pays homage to Orson Wells with a radio-play within a show
• Plaintive pop from Scars and Scarves (Garett McClure and Annalea Sordi), recreating Warhol’s Explosive Plastic Inevitable by performing the entirety of Velvet Underground and Nico.
• Garage grinders the Von Zippers, who will defy the prophesies and lead us to the new world as the official after-party band of the End of the World

In addition to two stages of rock, pop, blues and metal, the festival also includes:

• The Apocalypse Piano Bar, supported by the National Music Centre and Steinway Piano, providing audiences with torch songs, bossa nova, jazz and high weirdness.
• A centre for positivity and good vibes, including healing soundscapes, water ceremonies and smudging rituals.
• Extensive interactive installations curated by visual artist Sharon Stevens featuring Joe Kelly, Jack Bride, and Shiori Saito. 

Event monger Kenna Burima is anticipating that Calgarians will embrace the concept, and attend the event dressed in the spirit of the evening.

“Come as your favourite religious figure, cult leader, alien life form, or check one more thing off your bucket list and dare to express yourself any way you see fit. The audience will be as much a part of the event as the music and art. This is a way to bring us together to ponder the big questions while having a night of great fun. And you could also consider the festival as a great alternative to your office’s stuffy old seasonal holiday party. The timing is right, and the end is nigh.”
