The Statue of Love sculpture inspired by the love story of "Ali and Nino" was created by Georgian artist Tamar Kvesitadze.
The story is similar to Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and tells of an Azerbaijani youth who falls in love with a Georgian princess but dies defending his country. The action in the novel takes place in the Caucasus, against the background of the events of the First World War.
The book is a search to reconcile the contradictions of Islam and Christianity, East and West, men and women.
The author still remains unknown; it has been published over 100 times in 33 languages of the world. "Ali and Nino" was a bestseller in 1937, and is still read today.
The 7 ton statues start their motion at 7 P.M every day and are controlled by computer and lit with dramatically coloured lighting.
